We Survived PARCC Testing!

Hey all!

Well, we survived our first week of "PARCC" testing. Our state isn't actually using the official PARCC test. We are using a PARCC-like test. I feel that my students were very prepared for the test, which I am thankful for!

Here are some great recourses we have used this year to help us with our comprehension, vocabulary, and text-based evidence:

* Read Works
https://www.readworks.org

* Writing to Texts
* Common Core Reading- Warm-Ups & Test Practice
* Language Arts 4 Today (Our bell work)
* 25 Complex Text Passages to Meet the Common Core

* Wonders (McGraw-Hill) Weekly and Unit Tests (Grade 5)

* Wonders Count Down to Common Core Assessments (McGraw-Hill)

* PARCC Practice Tests
http://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/english/

Now I get to breathe a little and look forward to next week! It's Teacher Appreciate Week next week at A.C. Steere! We are currently reading our novel, The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker, and completing our novel packet. We are also focusing on grammar, proofreading, spelling, and vocabulary the next couple of weeks. After the first week of April, we will focus more on Test-Prep for the PARCC End of Year test.

I hope you all have had a fantastic week!

Instrumental Hip Hop and Novel Studies

Hey all!

Today we are jamming out to instrumental hip hop music and completing some of our novel packet for the novel we've been reading. We have started reading The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker. I absolutely love this book. It is about a young boy who loses his family to consumption (tuberculosis) and leaves his home. He becomes an apprentice to a doctor. It is set in the 1800's. My students are so amazed at the history of medicine. They are baffled at how limited the knowledge of medicine and germs were in the 1800's.

I let my students work with a partner or in a group of 3 today, and they could work anywhere in the room. They love this! After they independently answered the questions for the chapters, we discussed the correct answers. I've used novel packets in different ways in the past. Sometimes I take pages for a grade and other times I use it as a discussion tool. The novel packet is basically their study packet for the test. For this particular novel our test will be at the very end.

Inside Jokes and Funny Students

Everybody meet Roachella!

At the beginning of the year there was a massive live roach in my classroom. I screamed at the top of my lungs. Ever since then, my homeroom class and I have had an inside joke about cockroaches. One particular student has joked with me about it all year. She's a talented artist, and I've asked her to draw me a silly picture of a cockroach dancing. Despite my inquiring, she has yet to create this masterpiece. However, today she brought in a toy cockroach that actually moves!!! She tried to scare me with it by putting it under my Elmo. Considering we've been joking about this all year, I knew it must be fake. So instead of screaming I told the class this is our new "pet" named Roachella, and I tied a little bow around her. lol Now she is hanging by our Homework for the day. haha

It's the little things that make this my best year of teaching so far.

I love my silly students and our inside jokes!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Good afternoon my lovely followers!

I hope you're having a wonderful day! Today we celebrated Valentine's day at A.C. Steere. Let me tell you, I definitely feel the love! My students are so wonderful. All of them have put a smile on my face today. I received some fantastic gifts and chocolates, but the best presents are always the ones that money can't buy. I received the sweetest notes from one of my students today, and it brought tears to my eyes. I teach not only to educate children, but to make a difference. Sometimes the impact educators have on children isn't always noticeable in huge ways, but it's the little things that remind us that our presence does make a difference!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
