Little Update!

Good morning everyone!

I just wanted to give you a little update about some things we've been doing in class!

During our WIN time (RTI time) we've been discussing using evidence to answer questions. This week, we showed movie clips from Akeelah and the Bee. Students had to answer questions using evidence from the movie. :) They really liked this activity!

In class, we have been discussing Black History Month. On Friday we started a new writing assignment. Students read the story "Rosa" from our textbook and filled out a Cause and Effect graphic organizer. Then, they created an outline of their writing assignment. This lesson is taken from our Wonders Module 4 that I helped create! 

We will begin our new novel study next week! We will be reading The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker. This is my favorite novel that we read! I can't wait to start it!

There is also a research project that goes along with this novel. I haven't decided if we're going to do this one this year. Our Number the Stars novel study took longer than I expected.

Instrumental Hip Hop and Novel Studies

Hey all!

Today we are jamming out to instrumental hip hop music and completing some of our novel packet for the novel we've been reading. We have started reading The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker. I absolutely love this book. It is about a young boy who loses his family to consumption (tuberculosis) and leaves his home. He becomes an apprentice to a doctor. It is set in the 1800's. My students are so amazed at the history of medicine. They are baffled at how limited the knowledge of medicine and germs were in the 1800's.

I let my students work with a partner or in a group of 3 today, and they could work anywhere in the room. They love this! After they independently answered the questions for the chapters, we discussed the correct answers. I've used novel packets in different ways in the past. Sometimes I take pages for a grade and other times I use it as a discussion tool. The novel packet is basically their study packet for the test. For this particular novel our test will be at the very end.

Monday Made It: Common Core Book Study

I completed my book study! The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker is an amazing novel that teaches students the history of medicine and the importance of the scientific method. It is set in the 1800's. Lucas's family dies of consumption. After being left all alone, he leaves his farm house and moves to the city. There, he meets Doc Beecher. He becomes an apprentice for Doc and learns of a cure for consumption.

Five for Fridays!

 This week I've been enjoying my time at the beach! Yesterday I went running along the beach. It was so peaceful! We are in Ocean Springs for Treg's job. It's been really awesome getting away for a little while. 

Even though I've been on vacation, I couldn't completely leave work at home! lol I finished The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker. I have to say, this book is so fantastic! I'm so glad that I found this gem! It has such great vocabulary and history! I'm currently working on a Common Core Book Study for this book. It will be for 4th-6th grade. This book is definitely (in my opinion) on par with Number the Stars (one of the other novels I'll be teaching). 

The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker is a historical fiction book about a boy who loses his family to consumption (tuberculosis) and learns of a bizarre "cure". When he takes a job as apprentice to the town doctor, he learns about the scientific approach to healing, but seeing so many die, he desperately wants to help other families try the cure that might save his family.

It's so good! I highly recommend this for 5th grade classrooms!

I've been reading a lot of articles on Reddit.com this week. I'm not really a novel girl. I love to read and learn, but I prefer articles and research. If anyone has never heard of Reddit, I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves news, science, and history! They also have an education and teacher journal!

I discovered this show last night on Netflix, and I am officially obsessed! Anyone else watch this show? No spoilers please! lol I'm only on episode 3. I love crime and mystery!

So, I decided to try Plexus Slim. My dad and his wife, Becky, use it. They say that it makes them feel so much healthier and have more energy. I love health and fitness. I'm a pescatarian (A vegetarian who still eats seafood). I love working out, but since i've started a new medicine my doctor put me on, I've had a hard time maintaining my weight. I'm hoping this product will help me tone up since I'm taking it along with working out and eating healthy. Has anyone ever tried Plexus? What do you think about it? Did it work for you?
